Judith Gilbert was born into a show business family in New York. At an early age she began assisting theatrical scenic and lighting designers Off-Broadway. In Paris she studied with associates of the Beaux-Arts. After her university studies of art and German in New York she became an editor of art books and exhibition catalogues. Her editorial focus increasingly turned to layout, graphic design and pictorial language. Today Judith Gilbert is a photographer and artist. Her photographic portraits depart from convention and present the subjects in authentic yet unusual situations. Her large-format art – mixed media, collages and installations – are vibrant and humorous and informed by found objects from daily urban life. Judith Gilbert's work has been the subject of various solo exhibitions and can be found in private collections in New York, Miami, Basel, Munich and Paris.
